 Singing the Blues
Okay I can't sing. And for sure nothing like that contestant over in England, Susan Boyle (?), who blew the doors off the competition with a heart string tugging, get out the handkies song. If you haven't viewed that video, you owe it to yourself.

I digress.

A few weeks ago I tripped in a parking lot holding a cup of coffee. As I'm "going down" I'm thinking: "How do I save the coffee and bagel?" Okay...too much thinking, because by the time the neurons processor got the "go ahead and think" my knee was slamming into the pavement resulting in an Owwie of the not too pleasnat kind.

I drove home.

On the good news side I didn't have an owiee on my bike, which would have made my wife very unhappy. The last one saw far too much of my skin left on the road.

Anyways, the knee felt okay so I did a short ride thinking: "This will loosen it up". Of course what that probably did was aggravate the hell out of my knee, who then gathered up all his pain buddies to do a swell job on my knee. Literally.

By the next day I was in so much pain I went to the doc who said: "Yup you really screwed up your knee. Wear this cast and you'll be fine." I says: "How long until I'm better?" And he says, in typical non committal doctor fashion: "Oh maybe in 3 days or a month." And this guy is the ortho doc for the Miami Heat NBA team.

I took his advice. I cried.

It's only been 8 days and in that time I figured I'm singing the blues becuase I figure this is what I've missed:

  • At least 5 days of doing intervals to keep myself in shape. That equates to about 75 miles and maybe burning what 1500 to 2000 calories?
  • Calories I should have burned are now sitting on my hips.
  • A week end of doing back to back metrics in Miami where the weather has been nothing short of awesome: Clear blue skies. TEmps in the low 80's Little to no humidity.
  • An awesome week end called the "Withaloochee Bent Invasion". Once a year there's a gathering of recumbents in Inverness Florida to do various rides on the Withlacoochee trail. Each year I've been overseas. This year I was so pumped that I could do this ride. I'm going to be in Miami. I can do the trail!!! NOT. Today and tomorrow about 100 of my closest recumbent friends are riding, dining, snacking, laughing, kibitzing, sharing ride stories and just having a darn good time. I'm lieing in bed with my leg in a soft brace.
  • Geocaching. Over the past 8 days I figure I could have found another 10 to 15 geocaches. Heck, I can't even drive to them much less bike to them. I can't even walk...okay I can walk: Gingerly. No, Ginger is not with me. Honest.
  • A couple of movies. I thought about dragging myself to a movie but where would I sit? Put my foot in the aisle and risk some idjit banging it? Not only that but the knee constantly throbs. I think my constant whimpering out loud would bother the other movie goers. I'm a woos when it comes to pain.
  • Walks on the beach. When I bike to Key biscayne, I often park the bike, take off the bike sandals, and spent some time just walking along the edge of the surf thinking I'm like Tom Hanks and a castaway on some forgotten island, making do with what I can find. Okay..it's a fantasy of the non X rated kind.
  • all of that and more

In the 3rd grade in Catholic school our class was practicing singing the "Lord's Prayer" for the Christmas concert. Sister Mary Magdalan Margaret O'Reilly Patrica etc walked over to where I was "singing", bent down and whispered in my ear: "Joseph me lad, would you mind just mouthing the words."

So I'll go sing the blues. Silently.

Joe, A heartfelt Get Well Soon! I'd been seeing your red cross "up" for the past few days and had wondered why. We know the mind is youthful and entertaining but it seems those dang body parts don't hold up as well.
Were you wearing those "bike sandels" at the time you tripped?

Yo BikerJohn....yay..it takes waaaaaaaay too much time to heal. Negative....was wearing a pair of "flip flops" which may have been my downfall.........literally.

Joeseph...you really can't rush healing the knee. I know. And biking really is bad for it, so follow the doc's advice. Take care.

Say it ain't so Joe! That is a bummer. The Sister Mary story telling you to lip sync was hilarious.
I'm not a "blues" singer but I'll sing for ya Joe! Please, heal fast.
Try not to get too bummed, maybe volunteering at one of the events you'll miss, will make you feel better.
Hang Tough!

I dedicate to you:
- screening of "Milk" I went to last Friday
- a nice 140k ride, all flat so great to ride by a recumbent (which I did NOT do) or even with a messed up knee

Get better and back on your bike soon!
